Paul Twitchell

Paul Twitchell (born October 22, 1908 – died September 17, 1971) was an American spiritual writer and teacher, who founded the religious movement known as Eckankar. He was born in Kentucky and worked in various occupations, including journalism, before embarking on a spiritual quest.

In the 1950s, Twitchell claimed to have had spiritual experiences and encounters with a spiritual teacher known as Sudar Singh, which inspired him to write several books on spirituality and create Eckankar. The movement combines elements of Eastern and Western spiritual traditions, with a focus on spiritual exploration and personal growth.

Twitchell’s teachings and writings have been controversial, with some critics accusing him of plagiarism and fraudulent claims. Despite this, Eckankar has continued to grow and has attracted followers around the world. After Twitchell’s death, the leadership of Eckankar passed to his student, Harold Klemp, who currently serves as the spiritual leader of the organization.
