Pecthimancy: Divination by Brushed Clothing

Pecthimancy, also called petchimancy, is an obscure form of divination in which signs are interpreted from the results of brushing clothing or cloth. Before modern laundering and dry cleaning, fine garments were commonly cleaned by brushing away dust, fibres and other material from their surface, and in pecthimancy the marks or patterns revealed during this ordinary task could be treated as omens.

The precise historical method is poorly documented. Later descriptions simply identify the practice as divination by brushed cloth, suggesting that the diviner observed whatever appeared after the fabric had been brushed and interpreted unusual traces, arrangements or marks for symbolic meaning.

The name itself is uncertain. It has been connected either with a Greek word associated with carding or combing wool, or with pēktē, meaning netting, combined with manteia, meaning divination or prophecy. Because the surviving references are sparse, any more elaborate explanation should be treated cautiously.
