Phenex - Demon and Spirit of Solomon

Phoenix: The Fallen Angel of Poetry, Siren Song and Forbidden Knowledge

Phoenix, also known as Phenix or Pheynix, is a fallen angel and the thirty-seventh of the 72 Spirits of Solomon. In the grimoire tradition, he holds the rank of marquis and rules over 20 legions of demons. He is one of the more fascinating Solomonic spirits because his manifestation is not immediately terrifying or grotesque. Instead, he appears in the form of a phoenix bird and sings with the sweet voice of a child.

This sweetness, however, is deceptive. Phoenix’s voice is often described as enchanting, seductive and dangerously beautiful. It is not merely song, but a kind of siren-call: a sound that can entrance the magician, weaken judgement and draw the mind away from control. For this reason, the magician is warned to take precautions and not allow the beauty of his voice to become a trap.

The Appearance of Phoenix

Phoenix appears in the form of a phoenix bird, the legendary creature associated with fire, death, rebirth and renewal. This image gives him a powerful symbolic presence within demonology. The phoenix is not simply a bird; it is a creature of transformation, rising from destruction and returning again through flame.

Yet in the case of the demon Phoenix, this symbolism becomes more complex. He is not only a figure of renewal, but also of fallen splendour. His fiery form suggests spiritual brilliance, but his infernal rank reminds us that this brilliance has been displaced from its original heavenly order.

He sings before he takes human form, and this singing is one of his most dangerous traits. His childlike voice may appear innocent, but the magician must remember that innocence of sound does not mean innocence of spirit.

The Siren Voice of Phoenix

The voice of Phoenix is one of the most important parts of his legend. It is described as sweet, melodic and childlike, yet it carries the danger of seduction. The magician must not become emotionally or spiritually captivated by it.

This detail is important because it reveals a deeper lesson within demonology: not every danger appears as horror. Some dangers come clothed in beauty. Some temptations arrive as music, poetry, elegance or longing. Phoenix represents the power of enchantment: the ability of sound, art and beauty to open the soul, but also to distract it from discipline.

In ritual terms, this is why the magician must remain focused. The command must be clear. The will must remain steady. The voice must not rule the operator.

Phoenix in Human Form

When commanded, Phoenix assumes human shape. In this form, he speaks on all the sciences and reveals knowledge with intelligence and eloquence. He is not merely a spirit of song, but also a teacher of learning, wisdom and intellectual arts.

This places Phoenix among those Solomonic spirits who are connected with knowledge rather than brute force. He can answer questions concerning the sciences, and he is especially associated with poetry. His words are said to be excellent, refined and satisfying.

Phoenix therefore stands at the crossroads between art and knowledge. He is a spirit of voice, language, poetry, intellect and hidden instruction.

Phoenix as Poet and Teacher

Phoenix is described as a good poet who answers requests in verse. This makes him unusual among the spirits of the Goetia. His power is not only in what he says, but in how he says it.

Poetry has always occupied a special place in magic. It shapes rhythm, emotion, memory and invocation. Incantations, hymns, charms and ritual formulas all depend upon the power of ordered language. Phoenix’s poetic ability links him to the magical force of speech itself.

Through Phoenix, we see that words are not passive. They can seduce, instruct, command, bless, bind and transform. His gift of poetry is therefore both beautiful and dangerous. It can illuminate the mind, but it can also enchant the heart.

The Fallen Throne

Before his fall, Phoenix belonged to the angelic order of Thrones. This is a significant detail. The Thrones are traditionally associated with divine justice, cosmic order, authority and the mysterious stability of the heavenly hierarchy.

Phoenix’s former place among the Thrones gives him a tragic dimension. He is not merely a demon of art or knowledge; he is a fallen celestial intelligence who remembers a higher station. According to tradition, he hopes to return to the seventh throne after 1,200 years.

This hope is often described as futile. It reflects the sorrowful tension found in many fallen spirits: the memory of heaven, the reality of exile and the longing for restoration.

The Hope of Return

Phoenix’s belief that he may return to the seventh throne after 1,200 years is one of the most haunting elements of his description. Whether read literally, symbolically or theologically, this hope gives him a melancholic quality.

He is a spirit of beauty, but also of loss.
He is a poet, but also an exile.
He is a singer, but his song may lead the unwary astray.
He remembers the Thrones, yet reigns as a marquis in Hell.

This makes Phoenix a powerful figure for occult interpretation. He represents the splendour of fallen intelligence, the danger of seductive beauty and the longing of the soul to return to a lost divine order.

The Symbolism of Phoenix

Phoenix carries several layers of symbolism. As a phoenix bird, he is connected with fire, death, rebirth and transformation. As a fallen angel, he is connected with exile, lost glory and spiritual descent. As a poet, he governs language, rhythm, beauty and inspired speech. As a siren-like singer, he warns of the dangers of enchantment.

His powers over science and poetry show that demonology is not only concerned with fear or possession. It also deals with knowledge, art, memory, discipline, temptation and spiritual hierarchy.

Phoenix teaches that beauty must be approached with discernment. Not all that is beautiful is safe. Not all that is wise is holy. Not all that sings should be followed.

Phoenix in Demonological Study

For students of demonology, Phoenix is one of the most compelling spirits of the Solomonic tradition. He reveals the complex relationship between fallen angelology, infernal rank, magical knowledge and poetic inspiration.

He is not a simple monster. He is a marquis of Hell who sings like a child, teaches like a scholar, speaks like a poet and remembers the Thrones.

This is why Phoenix remains such a fascinating figure in the study of the ancient grimoires. He shows that the spirits of Solomon are not one-dimensional beings, but symbolic intelligences with ranks, histories, powers, dangers and mysteries.

From “The Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King” (1904) Written by S.L. MacGregor Mathers

PHENEX. – The Thirty-Seventh Spirit is Phenex (or Pheynix). He is a great Marquis, and appeareth like the Bird Phoenix, having the Voice of a Child. He singeth many sweet notes before the Exorcist, which he must not regard, but by-and-by he must bid him put on Human Shape. Then he will speak marvellously of all wonderful Sciences if required. He is a Poet, good and excellent. And he will be willing to perform thy requests. He hath hopes also to return to the Seventh Throne after 1,200 years more, as he said unto Solomon. He governeth 20 Legions of Spirits. And his Seal is this, which wear thou, etc.

From the “Pseudomonarchia Daemonum” ( 1583 ) Written by Johann Weyer (Johann Wier)

Phoenix is a great marquesse, appearing like the bird Phoenix, having a childs voice: but before he standeth still before the conjuror, he singeth manie sweet notes. He is an excellent poet, and obedient, he hopeth to returne to the seventh throne after a thousand two hundreth yeares, and governeth twentie legions.

Original Text:

Phœnix magnus Marchio: apparet uti avis phœnix puerili voce: sed antequam se sistit coram exorcista, cantus emittit dulcissimos: tunc autem cavendum exorcistæ cum suis sociis, ne suavitati cantus aures accommodent, sed ille mox huic jubeat humanam assumere speciem, tunc mire loquetur de cunctis scientiis admirandis. Poëta est optimus and obediens. Sperat se post mille ducentos annos ad septimum thronum rediturum. Viginti præest legionibus.

From the “Dictionnaire Infernal” (edition of 1863 ) Written by Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy

Original Text :

English Translation :

Phenex, great marquis of the infernal regions. He appears in the form of a phoenix with the voice of a child; before showing himself to the exorcist, he makes melodious sounds. On the contrary, one must cover one’s ears when commanding him to take human form.

He answers questions on all the sciences. He is a good poet, who satisfies every request in verse. After a thousand years, he hopes to return to the seventh order of the Thrones.

Twenty legions obey him.

Note From Occult World :

In the Dictionnaire Infernal he only hopes that after 1000 years ( and not 1200 ) he will return to the order of Thrones.
