Spatilomancy

Spatilomancy, also known as spatalamancy or spatalomancy, is a form of divination based upon the examination of animal excrement, skins or bones. The practitioner interprets the physical appearance, form, arrangement or condition of these materials in order to obtain signs concerning hidden circumstances or future events.

The name is derived from the Greek spatilē, meaning “excrement”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. The term therefore refers literally to divination through excrement, although the practice is also associated with the interpretation of other animal remains.

Methods of Spatilomancy

In its traditional forms, spatilomancy involves examining material left behind by animals and treating its physical characteristics as a source of divinatory information. Animal faeces may be interpreted according to their shape, arrangement or other visible qualities, while skins and bones may likewise be examined for unusual markings, forms or patterns considered significant by the diviner.

The method belongs to a much broader family of divinatory traditions in which animal remains are treated as carriers of omens. Rather than manipulating a symbolic system such as cards, lots or dice, the practitioner reads signs directly from physical material associated with the animal.

Modern Forms

A modern related practice is sometimes called splatomancy, in which the patterns formed by bird droppings upon a car are interpreted as signs. Although humorous or informal in appearance, the principle remains recognisably similar to older forms of divination: an apparently random natural deposit is treated as a meaningful pattern that can be examined and interpreted.

Within the Occult World classification, spatilomancy belongs most naturally to Divination by Observation, because the practice depends upon examining the visible characteristics of animal remains rather than deliberately generating an answer through a cast, spin or suspended object. Splatomancy may sometimes verge upon spontaneous divination when an unexpected bird dropping is treated immediately as an omen, but the broader practice of spatilomancy is best classified by its observational method.
