Sphondulomancy: Divination by the Spindle

Sphondulomancy is an obscure form of divination in which the movement of a spindle is observed and interpreted for signs of the future. The name derives from the Greek sphondylos, referring to a spindle or its rounded whorl, combined with manteia, meaning divination or prophecy.

The spindle was once an essential household object, used constantly in the transformation of raw fibre into thread. Within sphondulomancy, however, its turning motion became something more mysterious. The direction, movement, hesitation or final position of the spinning spindle could be watched for indications concerning a question or future event.

Very little survives concerning a formal historical ritual for the practice, and sphondulomancy remains one of the more obscure forms of traditional divination. Its principle, however, is familiar throughout the occult arts: an object is placed in motion without complete conscious control, and the diviner searches for meaning in the way that motion unfolds.
