Sulphur
Sulphur in Alchemy – The Fiery Masculine Force
In alchemy, sulphur is more than just a chemical—it’s a powerful symbol. It represents the masculine principle, the spark of fire and activity that drives transformation. Sulphur is associated with the Sun, the Dragon, and the Ouroboros—the serpent that eats its own tail, symbolising eternal cycles and the hidden fire of life.
One of sulphur’s key roles in alchemical work is to coagulate Mercury—the feminine, flowing, ever-changing substance. Mercury on its own is fluid and elusive, but when united with sulphur, it becomes stable or “fixed.” This mystical union of opposites is what creates transformation and balance. In simple terms, sulphur brings structure and energy to the chaos of mercury.
According to Paracelsus, a well-known alchemist and physician, sulphur and salt are the “parents” of mercury. This means that the fiery masculine (sulphur) and the grounding body (salt) come together to give birth to the spirit of transformation (mercury). He also said mercury is the child of the Sun and the Moon, reminding us again of the sacred marriage between masculine and feminine energies.
So, when alchemists work with sulphur, they’re not just playing with fire—they’re engaging with the active principle of creation itself.
