Symbolomancy

Symbolomancy is a form of divination based upon interpreting people, animals or objects encountered along a road or journey as omens. The practice rests on the idea that apparently ordinary encounters may carry symbolic meaning, particularly when they occur at the beginning of a journey or at an important moment.

The name is derived from the Greek sumbolon, meaning “sign” or “symbol”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”.

Method

Symbolomancy can take many forms, but one of its most familiar expressions concerns the first person, animal or object encountered by a traveller on the road. The nature of that encounter is then interpreted as favourable or unfavourable, with particular figures or combinations regarded as signs of what may lie ahead.

According to The Complete Book of the Occult and Fortune Telling by M. C. Poinsot, certain roadside encounters were traditionally considered auspicious. Among those listed as favourable were meeting a madman, a hunchback, or a group consisting of a postman, a soldier and a white horse. Other encounters were regarded as unfavourable, including meeting a priest, a gravedigger, a singing madman or a man without legs.

These examples reflect older systems of omen lore in which unusual or striking figures encountered during travel were assigned symbolic meanings. Such interpretations should be understood within the historical context of traditional fortune-telling, where physical appearance, profession and unexpected behaviour were often treated as signs rather than as ordinary social encounters.

Symbolomancy is therefore closely related to broader traditions of road omens and journey divination. The traveller does not normally create the sign deliberately; instead, meaning is assigned to whatever unexpectedly appears along the route.

Within the Occult World classification, symbolomancy belongs most naturally to Spontaneous Divinations, because the omen arises unexpectedly and is interpreted after the encounter occurs. It also overlaps conceptually with augury, but its defining feature is the unsolicited appearance of the sign.
