Umbromancy: Divination Through Shadows

Umbromancy is a form of divination in which meaning is sought through shadows, shade and the changing patterns created by darkness and light. The name derives from the Latin umbra, meaning “shadow”, combined with the Greek-derived -mancy, referring to divination or prophecy.

Unlike better documented systems such as astrology or augury, umbromancy does not possess a clearly established ancient ritual tradition. It is better understood as an obscure form of shadow divination in which the occultist observes the shape, movement, distortion or unusual behaviour of shadows and interprets them as signs.

Candlelight is particularly suited to such work because a living flame causes shadows to move, stretch and transform. Within an occult setting, a practitioner may watch the shadows cast upon a wall, floor or ritual space, searching for recognisable forms, sudden movements or recurring shapes that appear to answer a question or reveal something hidden.

The shadow has always carried powerful occult symbolism. It exists only because light is present, yet it reveals the dark outline created when that light is obstructed. For this reason, shadows have long been associated with hidden aspects of the self, unseen presences, spirits and the boundary between what can be perceived and what remains concealed.
