Maniel

Maniel is one of the twelve chief dukes said to serve the demon Dorochiel in the Ars Theurgia. Within this infernal hierarchy, Maniel commands forty ministering spirits of his own, placing him in a position of considerable authority beneath his superior.

Like many of the spirits described in the Ars Theurgia, Maniel is closely connected with the passage of time. He is said to favour manifestation during the earlier part of the day and is most appropriately approached before noon. This temporal restriction reflects the highly ordered magical universe presented in the grimoire, where spirits are not simply available at any moment but are bound to particular conditions of appearance.

Maniel’s allegiance to Dorochiel also connects him with the western point of the compass. Direction plays an important role throughout the Ars Theurgia, where infernal rulers and their subordinate spirits are distributed according to specific quarters of the world. The magician therefore works within a carefully structured cosmology in which space and spiritual authority are inseparable.

The fact that Maniel commands his own body of ministering spirits further emphasises the hierarchical nature of the system. He is not portrayed as an isolated demon acting according to personal whim, but as one figure within a larger chain of command. His authority exists because he belongs to that structure, just as the magician’s own authority depends upon understanding the system before attempting to engage with it.
