Meras

Meras is a demon who serves beneath Camuel, the infernal prince associated with the southeast in the Ars Theurgia. Within this hierarchy, Meras holds the rank of duke and commands one hundred ministering spirits who attend him.

His place within the grimoire is made particularly interesting by an apparent contradiction concerning the time of his manifestation. Meras is said to belong to the hours of the night, yet the text also states that he appears during the hours of the day. The Ars Theurgia does not clearly explain this inconsistency, leaving the practitioner with a curious tension between the spirit’s assigned nature and the period in which he is actually said to manifest.

This contradiction is characteristic of the complexities found throughout grimoire literature. Magical texts were copied and transmitted across generations, and their systems were not always perfectly preserved. A spirit could therefore retain one traditional correspondence while another part of the text assigned him a different operational condition.

Meras nevertheless remains firmly situated within the southeastern hierarchy governed by Camuel. His status as a duke places him above lesser spirits, while the hundred ministers under his authority indicate that he was regarded as a significant figure within that infernal court.

The figure of Meras also illustrates how the Ars Theurgia approaches the spirit world as an ordered structure rather than a chaotic collection of demons. Direction, rank and timing all matter, even when the surviving text leaves contradictions unresolved. The magician was expected to work within this system rather than ignore it.
