Nimerix

Nimerix is a demon named in the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears in connection with the great operation traditionally undertaken to attain knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel.

In the influential 1898 translation prepared by Samuel L. MacGregor Mathers, Nimerix occupies an unusually direct position within the infernal hierarchy. He is said to acknowledge Astaroth as his only master, binding him exclusively to one of the most powerful infernal rulers encountered within Western ceremonial magic.

This detail gives Nimerix a clearer hierarchical identity than many of the more obscure spirits in the Abramelin material. Rather than appearing beneath several rulers or within an uncertain chain of command, his allegiance is presented as singular. Astaroth alone stands above him.

The importance of Nimerix also comes from the magical context in which he appears. The Abramelin operation is centred upon the attainment of spiritual authority through communion with the Holy Guardian Angel. Only within that larger framework does the magician eventually confront the infernal powers and their subordinate spirits.

Nimerix therefore belongs to a magical system in which contact with demons is not presented as the beginning of the work. The magician is first expected to establish a higher form of spiritual authority, after which the demonic hierarchy may be approached from a position of command rather than submission.

Very little individual mythology survives concerning Nimerix himself. His appearance and specialised powers are not clearly described in the material cited here. What remains is his name, his connection with the Abramelin operation and his absolute allegiance to Astaroth.

That fragment is enough to place him within one of the most influential systems of ceremonial magic ever transmitted into the Western occult tradition.
