TYROMANCY

Tyromancy, also known as tiromancy and sometimes typomancy, is an old form of divination using cheese, particularly the appearance of curds during coagulation and the shapes, holes, moulds and other patterns that develop as cheese forms or matures. The practitioner interprets these apparently accidental characteristics as signs concerning future events, relationships, prosperity, misfortune or other matters about which guidance is sought.

The name is derived from the Greek tyros, meaning “cheese”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. Tyromancy therefore means literally divination by cheese.

History

Tyromancy has a surprisingly long history. References to divination involving cheese pre-date the Middle Ages, although medieval and early modern Europe became especially associated with the practice. Cheese was an ordinary part of domestic and agricultural life, and its unpredictable processes of coagulation, ageing and mould growth provided numerous natural patterns that could be interpreted as omens.

During the Middle Ages, the physical characteristics of cheese were reportedly examined for predictions concerning love, money, death and future fortune. The shape of the cheese, the number and arrangement of holes, the development of mould and other unusual features could all acquire symbolic significance. In this respect, tyromancy follows the same underlying principle as many other observational forms of divination: a naturally developing pattern is regarded as meaningful rather than accidental.

Methods

One of the most characteristic methods of tyromancy involves watching the formation of curds as milk coagulates. Shapes, divisions and unusual configurations appearing during the process may be examined and interpreted as signs. The finished cheese can likewise become the divinatory medium, with holes, cracks, mould patterns and other visible characteristics forming the basis of the reading.

A traditional form of love divination is associated with young women attempting to discover the identity of a future husband. The names of prospective suitors were written upon separate pieces of cheese, which were then left until mould began to develop. The name attached to the piece upon which mould appeared first was believed to identify the most suitable or destined partner.

Another method combined cheese divination with animal augury. Several possible answers to a question were written upon separate pieces of cheese and placed before a hungry mouse or other rodent. The first piece eaten by the animal was taken as the answer. This particular technique overlaps with myomancy, because the choice made by the mouse becomes the decisive omen.

The various methods demonstrate that tyromancy is not confined to one particular characteristic of cheese. Coagulation, ageing, mould growth, holes, cracks and even the way in which an animal interacts with pieces of cheese can all become part of the divinatory process.

Typomancy and Tyromancy

The alternative name typomancy requires some care because the same word has also been used for an entirely different form of divination involving typographical errors. When typomancy is used as a synonym for tyromancy, it refers to divination through cheese or curds. When it refers instead to accidental mistakes in writing or printing, it belongs to a different divinatory practice altogether.

The Camembert Divination Toast

A recipe titled Camembert Divination Toast appears in Mrs. Allen on Cooking, Menus, Service: 2500 Recipes, published in 1924. The preparation calls for Camembert with its rind removed, spread thickly upon slices of bread or crackers, seasoned with salt and paprika and baked until the surface of the cheese becomes golden brown.

The surviving recipe is an intriguing use of the word “divination”, but it does not itself provide instructions for interpreting the resulting cheese as an oracle. It is therefore better regarded as a curious historical reference associated with the name than as evidence for a recognised twentieth-century method of tyromancy.

Cheese as an Oracle

Tyromancy belongs to the enormous family of divinatory traditions that seek meaningful patterns in ordinary substances. Cheese is especially suited to this kind of interpretation because it visibly transforms over time. Milk separates into curds, curds consolidate, holes emerge, surfaces crack and mould spreads in formations that cannot be predicted precisely beforehand. Within the logic of divination, these uncontrolled transformations create the space in which an omen can appear.

Certain specialised methods, particularly those involving a mouse choosing between several pieces, overlap with Sortileges and Augury, but these are secondary variations rather than the defining principle of the practice.
