Arbiel is a demon named in the Ars Theurgia, where he appears among the twelve dukes who serve the infernal prince Hydriel. Unlike many spirits in the text who are bound to a particular quarter or direction, Hydriel possesses no fixed point of the compass. Because of this, Arbiel and the other spirits beneath him are described as wandering powers, moving through the directions rather than remaining tied to a single region.
Arbiel belongs to the class of aerial spirits, beings whose forms are considered subtle, elusive, and difficult to perceive directly. The Ars Theurgia suggests that spirits of this kind are more effectively observed through a crystal stone or scrying glass, where their forms may become visible to the magician without requiring a dense physical manifestation.
When Arbiel does appear, his shape is striking.
He is described as a serpent with the head of a woman, combining the intelligence and allure of the human form with the ancient and often ambiguous symbolism of the serpent. Within occult tradition, serpentine imagery can suggest hidden wisdom, danger, transformation, temptation, and the forces that move beneath the visible surface of things.
Arbiel’s preferred environments add another layer to his character. He is said to favour wet, marshy, or swamp-like places, giving him a distinctly liminal quality. Swamps occupy uncertain territory between solid land and open water, making them natural symbolic spaces for wandering spirits whose identities are equally difficult to fix.
This makes Arbiel more than simply another name within an infernal catalogue.
His wandering nature, aerial substance, serpentine form, and affinity for damp and desolate landscapes create the image of a spirit that belongs neither entirely to one element nor one direction. He exists between boundaries, appearing where certainty dissolves and where ordinary perception becomes unreliable.
The Ars Theurgia is filled with spirits of this kind, demons whose identities cannot be understood merely by memorising their names. Their rank, direction, time of manifestation, appearance, superior, and environment all form part of a much larger magical structure.
