Arcon: The Ruling Spirit of Beelzebub
Arcon is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, one of the most influential grimoires in Western ceremonial magic. In this text, Arcon appears as a spirit who serves the infernal lord Beelzebub, placing him within one of the darker and more powerful hierarchies of the Abramelin tradition.
The name Arcon likely derives from a Greek verb meaning “to rule” or “to govern.” This gives the demon a strong symbolic association with authority, command, domination and structured power. Even though Arcon is not described as an independent ruler, the meaning of his name suggests a spirit connected with rulership in some form: the power to command, influence, direct or impose order.
In the Abramelin system, demons are arranged beneath greater infernal authorities. Arcon’s service under Beelzebub is significant. Beelzebub is one of the great demonic rulers in Western demonology, often associated with corruption, pride, spiritual infestation, decay and the lordship of lesser spirits. To serve beneath Beelzebub places Arcon within a current of infernal command and hidden influence.
Because the Abramelin material gives little detail about Arcon’s appearance, personality or specific powers, his importance lies mainly in his name and position. This is common in the grimoire tradition. Many spirits are preserved only as names within a larger hierarchy, yet in ceremonial magic, names are never treated as meaningless. A name can reveal function, essence, rank or spiritual tendency.
Arcon may therefore be understood as a demon of rule and hidden authority. His name suggests the principle of governance, while his allegiance to Beelzebub connects him with infernal power structures. He belongs to the shadowed architecture of the Abramelin world, where spirits are not random beings, but organised forces within a vast magical hierarchy.
Symbolically, Arcon represents the darker side of rulership: control without compassion, command without wisdom, authority turned toward corruption. He may also reflect the occult idea that power itself must be mastered, purified and placed under higher spiritual authority. In the Abramelin operation, the magician does not seek power for its own sake. The lower spirits are commanded only after the knowledge and conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel has been attained.
This makes Arcon especially interesting. His name points toward rulership, yet he himself serves a greater infernal lord. He is both connected to command and placed within obedience. This tension reveals one of the deeper themes of demonology: even demons of power exist within hierarchies, chains of authority and hidden systems of command.
To study Arcon is to enter the more technical and mysterious side of the Abramelin tradition, where obscure names preserve fragments of ancient language, magical structure and infernal order.
