Cleidomancy
Cleidomancy is a system of divination in which a key is suspended and its movement is interpreted as a sign. In its best-known forms, the key is attached to or placed within a Bible and used to determine guilt, innocence or the identity of a suspected thief. Because the method depends upon the movement of a deliberately suspended object, cleidomancy is closely related to other forms of pendular divination.
According to traditional instructions, cleidomancy was ideally performed when either the Sun or the Moon was in the zodiacal sign of Virgo. The timing of the operation was therefore considered part of the ritual conditions under which the divination should take place.
The Key and the Bible
One traditional method involved writing the name of the person under investigation upon a key. The key was then tied to a Bible, and the combined objects were suspended from the nail of the ring finger of a virgin. While holding them in this position, she softly repeated certain prescribed words three times. The result of the divination depended upon whether the key and Bible remained still or began to turn. Their movement was interpreted as an indication of guilt, while their remaining stationary could be taken as evidence of innocence.
Some accounts describe a more elaborate version of the procedure in which the seven penitential psalms, litanies and sacred prayers were added to the operation. These additional religious elements were believed to intensify the effect of the divination. In such traditions, the supposed consequences for the guilty person could become considerably more dramatic. The key and Bible were not only expected to turn, but the mark or impression of the key was said to appear upon the guilty individual, while other versions threatened the loss of an eye.
Another method required the key to be placed upon the Fiftieth Psalm. The Bible was then closed and bound tightly with a woman’s garter before being suspended from a nail. Names of suspected thieves were spoken aloud while the suspended Bible was observed. When the name of the guilty person was pronounced, the key and Bible were expected to turn.
A third form of cleidomancy involved two people rather than a single operator. The Bible was suspended between them, while each person supported the ring of the key with a forefinger. The movement of the suspended book and key was then interpreted as the response to the question being asked.
Cleidomancy is therefore more than simple observation of a key. It combines the symbolic authority of the key with the sacred status of the Bible, ritual timing, spoken words and controlled suspension. Within these practices, the key becomes an instrument through which concealed guilt or hidden identity is supposedly revealed.
Within the Occult World classification, cleidomancy belongs most naturally to Sortileges, because the divinatory result is produced through the controlled suspension and movement of an object rather than through the interpretation of an unsolicited natural omen.
Go Deeper into the Forbidden Arts of Divination
Cleidomancy demonstrates how even an ordinary household object could become a ritual instrument when placed within the symbolic world of traditional divination. Keys, rings, books, sieves, pendulums and countless other objects have all been transformed into devices for questioning the unseen and forcing hidden matters into the open.
