Igilon : A Demon of the Four Infernal Princes

Igilon is a demon named in S. L. MacGregor Mathers’ translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. Within the magical hierarchy presented in this work, Igilon serves beneath the four powerful infernal princes associated with the cardinal directions.

His masters are Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon. Their authority forms an important part of the spiritual structure found within the Abramelin tradition, where demons are presented as members of an organised hierarchy rather than as isolated supernatural beings.

Igilon occupies a subordinate position within this system. The surviving material does not provide an elaborate description of his appearance or assign him a clearly defined individual power. Instead, his significance comes from his relationship to the greater spirits whose authority encompasses the directional divisions of the magical world.

This is typical of many of the lesser demons preserved within Abramelin. Their names survive because they belonged to a much larger system of ritual authority. Understanding them therefore requires looking beyond individual descriptions and examining the occult structure in which they were placed.

Igilon may appear to be little more than a name in a centuries-old grimoire, but that name is another surviving fragment of an elaborate magical worldview in which invisible powers were believed to exist within carefully ordered spheres of command.
