Ileson

Ileson is a demon named in the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears among the spirits belonging to the extensive infernal hierarchy of the work.

According to the influential 1898 English translation produced by Samuel L. MacGregor Mathers, Ileson serves beneath the infernal ruler Astaroth. His position places him within the authority of one of the most prominent demonic figures encountered in Western grimoire tradition.

The spelling Ileson, however, appears to be peculiar to the Mathers translation. In other versions of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin, the same demon is named Iloson. Differences of this kind occur frequently throughout the Abramelin manuscripts, where unusual spirit names were transmitted through different languages and copied by scribes who did not always preserve identical forms.

Little individual information survives concerning Ileson beyond his name and allegiance. The text does not provide him with a developed mythology or clearly defined personality, making his position beneath Astaroth the principal surviving clue to his place within the magical system.

This apparent lack of detail should not make Ileson insignificant. The Abramelin presents an enormous spiritual hierarchy populated by many obscure beings whose identities survive only through their relationship with more powerful infernal rulers. Taken together, these spirits reveal a magical universe governed by authority and subordination rather than by random supernatural activity.

Ileson therefore represents one small fragment of a much greater structure. To understand him properly means looking beyond the individual name and recognising the hierarchy in which the Sacred Magic of Abramelin places him.

The Name Is Only the Entrance
