Lariel: The Northern Spirit of Armadiel
Lariel is a demon named in the Ars Theurgia, a seventeenth-century grimoire that forms part of the wider Solomonic magical tradition. He appears as a servant of the demon-king Armadiel, and both Lariel and his superior are connected with the hierarchy of the north.
In the Ars Theurgia, spirits are arranged through a precise system of direction, rank, rulership and time. Lariel is therefore not an isolated demon, but part of a structured magical court. His identity is shaped by his service to Armadiel, his northern affiliation and the specific time in which he may be called.
The north is often associated with coldness, darkness, endurance, hidden wisdom, stillness and the more remote reaches of spiritual power. Within the Ars Theurgia, this direction becomes part of an infernal geography, where spirits are organised according to their proper place in the unseen world. Lariel belongs to this northern current, under the authority of Armadiel.
According to the text, Lariel has eighty-four lesser spirits who attend him. This gives him a significant position within the hierarchy. Although he serves Armadiel, he is not without authority of his own. His eighty-four attendants suggest a spirit of organised command, one who functions as part of a greater infernal court while still maintaining a retinue of subordinate beings.
One of the most interesting details about Lariel is his connection with time. If the day is divided into fifteen portions, Lariel belongs to the third portion. He is bound to appear only during those hours. This reflects the careful ritual timing found throughout the Ars Theurgia. Spirits are not summoned at random. Their appearance is governed by hours, directions, rulers and cosmic order.
Lariel’s restriction to the third portion of the day gives him a precise magical identity. He is a spirit of appointed time, bound to a specific window of manifestation. This makes him part of the grimoire’s hidden rhythm, where each spirit has its own moment, its own ruler and its own place within the larger structure.
Symbolically, Lariel represents ordered service within the northern hierarchy. He is a demon of rank, timing and command, standing beneath Armadiel yet ruling over many lesser spirits of his own. His presence reminds us that old demonological systems were not chaotic lists of names, but carefully arranged maps of spiritual power.
To study Lariel is to enter the technical and mysterious world of the Ars Theurgia, where the unseen realm is organised like a vast court of spirits. Every name, hour, direction and number matters. Lariel’s eighty-four attendants, his northern allegiance and his appointed time of appearance all reveal the intricate structure behind ceremonial demonology.
