Lwnael

Lwnael is a demon whose unusually difficult name appears in the Ars Theurgia, where he belongs to the northern hierarchy ruled by the infernal king Baruchas.

Within this hierarchy, Lwnael holds the rank of duke, giving him considerable authority beneath his infernal superior. He is said to command thousands of lesser spirits, suggesting that his position within the court of Baruchas is far from insignificant.

What distinguishes Lwnael most clearly is the extraordinary precision surrounding the time of his manifestation. The Ars Theurgia divides the day into fifteen equal portions, and Lwnael is bound specifically to the thirteenth portion. He may manifest only during the hours and minutes contained within that period.

This restriction reflects the highly ordered supernatural universe presented throughout the Ars Theurgia. Spirits do not simply appear whenever the magician wishes. Their presence is governed by conditions that belong to the hierarchy and cosmology of the text, with the correct moment forming part of the magical structure surrounding the spirit.

For Lwnael, timing is therefore inseparable from identity. His rank identifies his position beneath Baruchas, while the thirteenth division of the day determines when interaction with him is considered possible within the system described by the grimoire.

His command over thousands of subordinate spirits further illustrates how vast these infernal courts were imagined to be. Behind a single obscure name stands an entire unseen retinue, suggesting a spiritual world organised through layers of authority extending far beyond the individual demon.

Lwnael may receive only a brief description in the surviving material, yet that fragment reveals one of the most important characteristics of the Ars Theurgia: occult power is presented as something governed by order rather than chaos.
