Mabakiel: The Spirit of Weeping and Lamentation
Mabakiel is a lesser-known spirit name found in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, the famous grimoire translated into English by the occultist S. L. MacGregor Mathers. The name is thought to be connected with words meaning “weeping” and “lamentation,” giving Mabakiel a mournful and sorrowful quality within the hierarchy of Abramelin spirits.
In the Abramelin tradition, spirits are often organised beneath greater infernal rulers, and Mabakiel is listed as being governed by Asmodeus and Magoth. This places the spirit within a darker current of magical command, connected not to independent demonic sovereignty, but to a structured hierarchy of forces under more powerful infernal names.
The meaning associated with Mabakiel suggests a spirit linked to grief, sorrow, emotional heaviness and the cry of the afflicted. Names in grimoires are rarely neutral. They often carry symbolic force, and Mabakiel’s association with lamentation may point towards states of mourning, despair, spiritual burden or the hidden pain carried within human experience.
Within an esoteric interpretation, Mabakiel may be understood as a spirit connected to the shadow of sorrow: the places where grief becomes power, where suffering becomes invocation, and where lamentation becomes a language of the soul. In many magical traditions, weeping is not only weakness. It can also be release, purification and the opening of a deeper spiritual threshold.
Because Mabakiel appears in the Abramelin material, the name belongs to a grimoire system concerned with discipline, purification, command of spirits and the relationship between the magician, the Holy Guardian Angel and the lower spiritual orders. In that context, Mabakiel is not merely a name of sadness, but part of a much larger magical structure in which spirits are named, ordered and brought under authority.
Mabakiel remains an obscure figure, but this obscurity is part of its power. Not every spirit in the grimoires is richly described. Some appear only as names, fragments, hints or shadows. Yet even these names open doors into the hidden architecture of ceremonial magic, where language, hierarchy and spiritual command are central to the work.
