Mebbesser

Mebbesser is a demon named in the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears as a servitor of the greater infernal power Asmodeus.

In the influential translation prepared by Samuel L. MacGregor Mathers, the name Mebbesser is interpreted as meaning “flesh.” That meaning gives the name a distinctly physical character and places emphasis upon the body rather than upon an abstract spiritual quality.

The surviving Abramelin material does not provide Mebbesser with an elaborate mythology of his own. His identity is preserved primarily through his name and through his subordination to Asmodeus, one of the most prominent demons in Western occult tradition.

A different form of the name appears in the 1720 Abramelin manuscript preserved in the Dresden library, where the spirit is called Mephasser. Variations such as this are common throughout the manuscript history of the Abramelin, where unfamiliar names changed as texts were copied and transmitted across generations.

The difference between Mebbesser and Mephasser is therefore best understood as part of that unstable textual tradition rather than as evidence for two clearly separate spirits. What remains consistent is the demon’s place beneath Asmodeus within the hierarchy of the work.

Mebbesser is another example of how the Sacred Magic of Abramelin builds its demonic world through layers of authority. Many spirits receive only a brief mention, yet their allegiance connects them to larger infernal powers and gives them a place within the ritual cosmology of the text.
