Melcha

Melcha is a demon ranked as a chief duke in the Ars Theurgia, where he appears beneath the authority of Raysiel, one of the infernal kings associated with the north.

Within this hierarchy, Melcha commands fifty lesser spirits of his own. His position therefore places him well above ordinary subordinate entities, while still binding him to the authority of Raysiel. The Ars Theurgia repeatedly presents the spirit world in this manner, with power descending through a carefully ordered chain rather than existing as something chaotic or undefined.

Melcha is also closely tied to the hours of the day. According to the grimoire, he will manifest only between dawn and dusk. The restriction reflects the importance of timing throughout the Ars Theurgia, where spirits are often assigned particular periods in which they may be approached.

The text further associates the operation involving Melcha and his accompanying spirits with privacy and isolation. The working is described as something that should take place away from interruption, either in a remote location or in a secluded room where outsiders are unlikely to interfere.

This emphasis on secrecy is characteristic of ceremonial magic. The magician was expected to create a controlled environment in which attention remained focused and the ritual space was protected from ordinary disturbance. Within the worldview of the grimoire, such preparation was part of maintaining authority over the encounter rather than allowing external interference to weaken the operation.

Melcha therefore represents more than another obscure demon name. His rank, his allegiance to Raysiel and his restriction to daylight manifestation reveal the structured cosmology behind the Ars Theurgia. The text assumes that spirits belong to systems of direction, timing and authority, and that anyone attempting to understand them must first understand the order in which they exist.
