Menadiel

Menadiel is a demon described in the Ars Theurgia as a wandering duke of the air whose court travels with him rather than remaining attached to a permanent direction. His authority extends over twenty dukes and one hundred companions, while a much larger body of unnamed servants exists beneath this immediate hierarchy. The result is a mobile spiritual court whose structure remains intact even as its ruler moves from one place to another.

The spirits belonging to Menadiel are governed by planetary timing, which means that their appearance is connected with the appropriate planetary hours. Within the magical worldview of the Ars Theurgia, this timing is fundamental to the relationship between magician and spirit. Menadiel’s servants are not presented as beings who can simply be approached whenever desired, because their accessibility depends upon the celestial order under which they operate.

Six dukes occupy the senior rank within Menadiel’s court. The sequence begins with Larmol, after whom the text places Drasiel and Clamor. Benodiel follows within the same ruling circle, while Charsiel appears before Samyel, who completes the group of chief dukes.

Beneath them stands another group whose authority is lesser but still significant within Menadiel’s wandering hierarchy. Barchiel opens this secondary circle, followed by Amasiel and Baruch. The succession then passes through Nedriel and Curasin before reaching Tharson, who completes the group.

Menadiel’s importance lies in the way his court demonstrates the mobility built into the Ars Theurgia. His spirits do not need a fixed infernal territory in order to preserve their rank, because the hierarchy itself moves with its ruler. Wherever Menadiel travels, the structure of command travels with him, and the planetary hours continue to determine when his subordinate spirits may be approached.

This makes his court a good example of the ordered supernatural world imagined by the grimoire. Wandering does not mean chaos. Menadiel may move through the aerial regions, but the spirits beneath him remain governed by rank and by the celestial timing that controls their manifestation.
