Nastros

Nastros is a demon of darkness described in the Ars Theurgia, as translated by Mitch Henson. He serves beneath Buriel, a wandering duke of the air whose court moves continually from place to place rather than remaining fixed within a single region.

Within this hierarchy, Nastros commands eight hundred and eighty lesser spirits. His considerable retinue marks him as a powerful subordinate within Buriel’s wandering court and places him far above the level of an ordinary ministering spirit.

Nastros is described as profoundly hostile and is said to fear the light. For that reason, he manifests only during the hours of darkness, reinforcing his association with night and concealment.

When he appears, Nastros takes the form of an enormous serpent. This monstrous body is crowned with the head of a woman, creating a disturbing fusion of human and reptilian characteristics. Despite the feminine appearance of the head, his voice is described as carrying the force and authority of a man.

The strangeness of this manifestation reflects the unsettling nature attributed to the spirits of Buriel’s court. Nastros does not appear as a beautiful tempter or a subtle deceiver. His form is openly monstrous and designed to inspire dread.

The Ars Theurgia presents Buriel and his entire hierarchy as exceptionally malevolent. Their reputation is so dark that they are said to be hated and reviled even by other spirits. Nastros therefore belongs to a demonic company whose hostility is extreme even by the standards of the grimoire itself.

His nocturnal nature further separates him from many of the spirits whose manifestation is tied to particular hours of the day. Nastros belongs entirely to darkness, and the grimoire preserves him as a being whose presence is inseparable from night.

Darkness Means Nothing If You Refuse to Understand It

A spirit such as Nastros shows exactly why Demonology cannot be reduced to a collection of frightening names. The moment you begin looking beyond the surface, you enter a world of hierarchy and symbolism in which every spirit exists inside a far greater architecture of occult power.
