Obizuth is a female spirit named in The Testament of Solomon, a magical and demonological text attributed to King Solomon and generally dated somewhere between the second century BCE and the second century CE.
In the text, Obizuth appears before Solomon and identifies herself as a dangerous, shape-shifting spirit. She declares:
“I am a fierce spirit of myriad names and shapes.”
Her nature is nocturnal and predatory. Obizuth wanders through the world at night, seeking out women in childbirth and attempting to harm newborn children. Her role places her within a wider ancient tradition of child-threatening female spirits, a category of beings feared especially in relation to pregnancy, birth, infancy, and maternal vulnerability.
When Solomon questions her, Obizuth reveals that she can be controlled and defeated by the name Afarol. This name is understood as another form or sacred name connected with the archangel Raphael, the angel of healing, protection, and divine remedy. Obizuth promises that wherever she sees this name, she will cause no harm.
Because of this, Raphael may be invoked directly as a protective force against Obizuth. In older magical and protective traditions, the name Afarol was sometimes engraved on amulets worn by women and children, especially as a safeguard against spiritual danger during childbirth and infancy.
Obizuth therefore represents more than a single demon from an ancient magical text. She embodies an old and persistent fear: the vulnerability of mothers and children at the threshold between life and death. Against her stands Raphael, not merely as an angelic figure, but as a force of healing, divine authority, and sacred protection.
MANIFESTATION:
The Testament of Solomon describes Obizuth as being in darkness although her glance is bright and cheerful. She tosses her long, loose hair wildly.
Although she may be a distinct spirit, Obizuth is generally considered to be Lilith, operating under one of her myriad names. If so, The Testament of Solomon contains the oldest known written reference to Lilith as baby slayer.
