Okiri: Demon of Astaroth
Okiri is a demon named in S. L. MacGregor Mathers’ translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears among the spirits governed by the great infernal power Astaroth.
Mathers suggested that the name Okiri may carry the sense of “to cause to sink” or “to fail,” although, as with many demon names preserved in the Abramelin tradition, the exact derivation remains uncertain. The surviving manuscripts differ considerably, and the same spirit appears under different forms of the name depending on the source.
In a version of the Abramelin material preserved in the Wolfenbüttel Library in Germany, the name appears as Okirgi, while a 1720 manuscript held in the Dresden Library gives the form Akrey. These variations are typical of the Abramelin tradition, where demon names were repeatedly altered through copying, translation, language changes and the transmission of manuscripts across Europe.
Okiri is not given an elaborate appearance or detailed individual office. His importance lies in his allegiance to Astaroth and in the larger infernal hierarchy preserved by the grimoire. Like many lesser demons of ceremonial magic, he survives as a name within a structured system of command, one fragment of a much larger occult architecture.
