Omphalomancy

Omphalomancy, also known as omphilomancy, is a form of divination based upon the examination of the navel or umbilical cord. The shape, depth, position and general appearance of the belly button may be interpreted as signs of personality, destiny, fertility or longevity, while the umbilical cord of a newborn child has also been used in traditional fortune-telling.

The name is derived from the Greek omphalos, meaning “navel”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”.

Methods

One traditional form of omphalomancy concerns the umbilical cord of a newborn child. According to popular belief, the number of knots visible in the cord could be counted in order to predict how many additional children the mother would later have.

Another form concentrates upon the navel itself. Its size, depth, orientation and shape are examined and interpreted as indications of personality or future fortune. As with many forms of somatomancy, the physical body is treated as a symbolic map whose visible characteristics are believed to reveal qualities that are otherwise hidden.

A deep “inny”, for example, has sometimes been associated with an introverted personality, while an outward-projecting “outty” has been linked with extroversion. Such interpretations belong to physiognomic and divinatory tradition rather than to scientifically demonstrated personality assessment.

The Six Navel Types

A modern interpretation of omphalomancy appears in Centered: Understanding Yourself through Your Navel by Gerhard Reibmann, in which different navel shapes are associated with personality traits and supposed life expectancies. These claims should be understood as part of the divinatory system presented in the book rather than as medically established predictions of longevity.

The horizontal navel is described as an oblong belly button extending sideways across the abdomen. Within this system, it is associated with a complex and highly emotional personality, with an attributed average life expectancy of sixty-eight years.

The vertical navel is likewise oblong but runs upwards and downwards rather than from side to side. It is said to indicate self-confidence, generosity and emotional stability, with a supposed average life expectancy of seventy-five years.

An outty, in which the navel protrudes outward, is associated with optimism and an enthusiastic approach to life. The system assigns this type an average life expectancy of seventy-two years.

The concave navel is described as bowl-shaped or deeply inward. It is associated with gentleness, affection, caution, sensitivity and a tendency towards anxiety, with a supposed average life expectancy of sixty-five years.

An off-centre navel is interpreted as indicating an unconventional, fun-loving personality accompanied by significant emotional fluctuations. Its attributed average life expectancy is seventy years.

The round navel, evenly shaped and circular, is associated with modesty, emotional balance and a quiet or retiring personality. Within Reibmann’s system, it is given the longest supposed average life expectancy, at eighty-one years.

These numerical predictions have no established medical basis, but they illustrate the extent to which modern forms of omphalomancy have attempted to transform the appearance of the navel into a detailed system of character and destiny reading.

Chinese Traditions

Chinese folklore has also attached symbolic meaning to the form of the navel. A deep, concave belly button has sometimes been regarded as particularly favourable, while the depth of the navel has been connected in traditional belief with fertility and the number of children a person may have.

Such ideas belong to folk and divinatory traditions in which bodily characteristics are interpreted symbolically rather than medically.

The Navel in Tantric Tradition

In Indian Tantric and yogic traditions, the region of the navel carries considerable spiritual significance because of its association with vital energy and the subtle body. Some esoteric teachings have treated the navel as an important centre through which life-force or cosmic energy is received, processed or distributed.

Modern occult interpretations sometimes extend these ideas into claims that the navel can be examined for indications of health or energetic imbalance. These interpretations should be distinguished from medical diagnosis, but they reflect the broader sacred symbolism of the navel as a centre of vitality, birth and connection with life.

The Navel as a Divinatory Sign

Omphalomancy belongs to the wider family of somatomancy, in which physical characteristics of the human body are interpreted for information concerning personality, fate or future circumstances. Much like palmistry, physiognomy or cartopedy, it assumes that the body contains visible signs capable of revealing qualities beyond ordinary observation.

The navel is particularly symbolically charged because it is the permanent physical trace of the umbilical connection between mother and child. Its association with birth, nourishment and the beginning of independent life helps explain why traditions concerning fertility, destiny and longevity became attached to it.
