Stigonomancy
Stigonomancy is a form of divination performed by writing, carving or inscribing signs upon the bark of a tree and then observing how those markings develop over time. Rather than producing an immediate answer, the method depends upon patience, because the diviner must wait for the carved signs to change, distort or combine into forms that can be interpreted as significant.
The name is derived from the Greek stizein, meaning “to brand” or “to mark”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”.
Method
In stigonomancy, the diviner carves signs, often described as runes, into the bark of a living tree. These markings are then left undisturbed while the natural growth and movement of the bark gradually alters their appearance.
Over time, the original signs may stretch, merge, split or develop into new shapes. The diviner studies these changes and waits until the markings form figures considered meaningful enough to interpret. The resulting shapes are then read as indications connected with the question or matter being investigated.
This makes stigonomancy unusual among divinatory practices because the answer is not expected to appear at once. The tree itself becomes an active part of the process, with natural growth transforming the original marks and producing the final pattern from which the divination is made.
Within the Occult World classification, stigonomancy belongs most naturally to Divination by Observation, because the decisive stage of the practice consists of observing and interpreting the visible evolution of the carved signs.
Enter the Living Systems of Divination
Stigonomancy shows how occult divination can transform even the slow growth of a tree into a medium for hidden knowledge. The practitioner does not merely carve a symbol and demand an answer; the sign is surrendered to time, nature and transformation until something new emerges from it.
