Zra

Dan (Côte d’Ivoire) – The Supreme God and Creator. Among Zra’s creations was Death. (See also death, origin of.) In the beginning, Death lived in wild places and killed only game animals. He did not enter the villages, so humans did not die. Then one day a hunter came across Death cooking meat over a fire. Death told the hunter that they were fellow hunters and offered him some meat. The hunter accepted, stayed with Death for several days, and brought some of Death’s meat back to the village. Shortly afterward, Death appeared in the village and demanded payment for the meat the hunter had eaten and taken. The hunter offered one of his children as payment. Death took the child. From that time on, Death went to the villages, and people died.
