Kataron

Kataron is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears beneath the authority of the infernal ruler Astaroth. His role belongs to the intricate hierarchy of spirits encountered during the central magical work of the Abramelin tradition, a system focused upon attaining knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel before commanding the infernal powers.

In his interpretation of the name, S. L. MacGregor Mathers suggests that Kataron may derive from a Greek term carrying the sense of being “cast down.” The proposed meaning fits naturally within the demonological language of fallen or degraded spiritual beings, although, as with many names in the Abramelin material, such etymologies should be treated as interpretive rather than certain.

Kataron’s importance comes primarily from his place within Astaroth’s hierarchy.

The Abramelin system is not built around isolated encounters with demons for their own sake. Instead, infernal spirits are approached only after the magician has undergone the central work involving the Holy Guardian Angel. Within that framework, demons such as Kataron are subordinated to a larger spiritual order in which authority descends from divine alignment rather than from uncontrolled invocation.

This gives Kataron a very different context from demons encountered in grimoires devoted primarily to evocation.

He is not simply another spirit to be called.

He is part of a structured confrontation between the magician, the Holy Guardian Angel, and the infernal hierarchies that must ultimately be brought under command.

That distinction is crucial.

Within Abramelin magic, power is not supposed to begin with demons.
