Kiligil

Kiligil is a demon named in the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears within the infernal hierarchy governed by Magoth.

The surviving information about Kiligil is limited, but his placement beneath Magoth establishes him as part of the structured demonic order found throughout the Abramelin. These spirits are not presented as isolated beings. Their significance comes partly from the infernal powers beneath whom they serve.

An additional detail appears in the fifteenth-century French manuscript used by Samuel L. MacGregor Mathers when preparing his translation of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin. In that manuscript, Kiligil is also placed beneath the authority of Kore.

This dual allegiance is one of the features that makes the Abramelin hierarchy so intriguing. The transmission of the text through different manuscripts created variations in the relationships between spirits, and those differences reveal how fluid some aspects of grimoire demonology could become over time.

No elaborate description of Kiligil’s appearance or individual powers is preserved in the material cited here. What survives is his name and his position within the infernal structure, linking him to Magoth and, in the French manuscript tradition, to Kore as well.

Kiligil therefore belongs to that vast population of lesser-known Abramelin spirits whose identities remain fragmentary. Their obscurity does not make them irrelevant. On the contrary, they reveal just how enormous and complex the demonic hierarchy envisioned by the grimoire truly was.
