Alomancy: Divination Through Salt

Alomancy, also known as halomancy, is a form of divination using salt. Very little survives concerning its precise ritual methods, but the practice belongs to the ancient belief that salt was far more than an ordinary substance. Because of its ability to preserve food and resist decay, salt became associated with purification, protection, sacred boundaries and supernatural power.

In alomancy, salt could be observed or interpreted for signs, with accidental disturbances sometimes regarded as omens. One of the best-known survivals of this belief is the superstition surrounding spilled salt. An overturned salt cellar was traditionally regarded as a warning that misfortune, conflict or bad luck might soon enter the household.

The fear surrounding spilled salt became deeply rooted in European folklore. Salt was once valuable, essential and symbolically pure, so wasting or disturbing it could be interpreted as an interruption of order. Later customs attempted to neutralise the omen by throwing a pinch of spilled salt over the left shoulder, traditionally towards the place where an evil spirit or the Devil was imagined to stand.

Alomancy therefore transforms one of the simplest substances of everyday life into an instrument of divination. A scattering of white crystals, an unexpected spill or a strange pattern left upon a surface could become more than an accident. To the diviner, salt might reveal that something unseen had already begun to move.
