Altanor : The Demonic Servant of Beelzebub

Altanor: The Demonic Servant of Beelzebub

Altanor is a lesser-known demonic spirit named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, one of the most influential grimoires in Western ceremonial magic. In this text, Altanor appears not as an independent ruler of Hell, but as a demonic servant of Beelzebub, one of the great infernal powers named in the Abramelin hierarchy.

In the fifteenth-century French manuscript used by S. L. MacGregor Mathers for his English translation of the Abramelin material, the name of this demon appears as Alcanor. This variation is important because many spirit names in grimoires changed as manuscripts were copied, translated, misread or transmitted through different occult traditions. A single letter could shift over time, creating variant forms of the same spirit name.

Altanor therefore belongs to the shadowy world of grimoire transmission: a world of handwritten manuscripts, magical alphabets, corrupted spellings, secret hierarchies and names that survived through fragments.

Within the Abramelin system, spirits are arranged beneath powerful infernal rulers such as Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Magoth, Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon. These spirits are not presented randomly. They belong to a structured magical universe in which lower spirits serve higher powers, and the magician seeks authority over them through discipline, purification and divine alignment.

As a servant of Beelzebub, Altanor is connected to one of the most formidable names in demonology. Beelzebub is traditionally associated with lordship over demons, corruption, infestation, pride and spiritual rebellion. To be named under Beelzebub places Altanor within a current of infernal service, command and hidden influence.

Because the Abramelin text gives little individual description of Altanor, the name remains mysterious. This is common in grimoires. Many spirits are preserved only as names, without elaborate myths, appearances or detailed powers. Yet in ceremonial magic, a name itself carries force. The act of naming fixes a spirit within a hierarchy and gives the magician a point of contact with the invisible world.

Altanor’s obscurity makes the spirit especially interesting. Unlike famous demons such as Asmodeus, Paimon or Bael, Altanor does not stand in the centre of demonological legend. Instead, this spirit lingers at the edges of the grimoire tradition, a hidden name beneath a greater infernal power. Such spirits remind us that demonology is not only built from dramatic stories and famous figures, but also from lists, hierarchies, manuscript variants and the occult belief that every name has meaning.

In symbolic terms, Altanor may be understood as a spirit of hidden service within a larger demonic order. His presence in the Abramelin material points to the deep structure of ceremonial magic: authority, obedience, hierarchy, secrecy and the careful handling of names that were believed to open doors into the unseen.
