Andras - Demon and Spirit of Solomon

Andras: The Dangerous Marquis of Discord

The demon Andras is a Fallen Angel and the sixty-third of the seventy-two Spirits of Solomon. In the infernal hierarchy, he holds the rank of great marquis and is said to rule over thirty legions of demons.

Andras is one of the most dangerous spirits described in the Goetic tradition. He is not a teacher of gentle wisdom, healing or reconciliation. His power is connected with conflict, violence, division and destruction. Because of this, the old grimoires warn that he must be approached with extreme caution, if at all.

The Appearance of Andras

Andras is traditionally described as appearing in the form of an angel, but with the head of a raven or sometimes a wooden owl. He rides upon a black wolf and carries a gleaming, sharp sword.

Every part of this image is symbolic. The angelic body suggests his origin as a Fallen Angel, while the raven or owl head links him with night, death, omens, hidden knowledge and predatory vision. The black wolf represents danger, hunger, instinct and the wild force of violence. His sword is the weapon of separation, cutting, conflict and execution.

Andras is therefore not merely a spirit who causes trouble. He embodies the force of deliberate division. He brings the blade into the household, the group, the alliance and the mind.

Andras and the Power of Discord

The grimoires say that Andras creates discord. This is one of his defining powers. Discord is more than simple disagreement. It is the breakdown of trust, peace and order. It can turn families against one another, destroy friendships, divide households and poison relationships from within.

Andras is also said to kill those who are not careful and wary, including the master, servants and assistants of a household. This warning makes him one of the more feared spirits of the Goetia. He is not presented as obedient, safe or easily controlled. He is a spirit whose very presence brings risk.

His traditional association with teaching people how to destroy their enemies should be understood within the violent magical worldview of the old grimoires. These texts often reflected the fears, conflicts and harsh realities of their time. In modern occult study, Andras is best approached as a symbol of destructive force, conflict magic, spiritual danger and the consequences of invoking powers rooted in violence.

The Warning of Andras

Andras is important because he reveals the darker side of grimoire demonology. Not every spirit in the Goetia is described as helpful, wise or cooperative. Some are openly dangerous, and Andras belongs firmly among them.

He represents the kind of power that can turn back upon the practitioner. The old warnings are clear: if the magician lacks discipline, caution and authority, Andras may harm not only the intended target but everyone involved.

For students of demonology, Andras is a reminder that the grimoires are not merely collections of exotic spirit names. They are texts filled with hierarchy, danger, ritual control, warnings and moral complexity. Andras stands at the edge of that dangerous territory, where curiosity can become consequence.

The Significance of Andras

Andras is a spirit of rupture. He tears apart bonds, creates hostility and carries the sword of conflict. His image is terrifying because it combines angelic form with predatory animal symbolism and martial violence.

To study Andras is to study the destructive current within demonology: the force that breaks, divides and devours. He belongs to the shadowed side of the Solomonic tradition, where spirits are not romanticised but treated as powers that demand seriousness, caution and respect.

Andras is not a demon of comfort. He is a warning.

From “The Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King” (1904) Written by Samuel MacGregor Liddel Mathers

The Sixty-third Spirit is Andras. He is a Great Marquis, appearing in the Form of an Angel with a Head like a Black Night Raven, riding upon a strong Black Wolf, and having a Sharp and Bright Sword flourished aloft in his hand. His Office is to sow Discords. If the Exorcist have not a care, he will slay both him and his fellows. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits, and this is his Seal, etc.

From the “Pseudomonarchia Daemonum” ( 1583 ) Written by Johann Weyer (Johann Wier)

Andras is a great marquesse, and is seene in an angels shape with a head like a blacke night raven, riding upon a blacke and a verie strong woolfe, flourishing with a sharpe sword in his hand, he can kill the maister, the servant, and all assistants, he is author of discords, and ruleth thirtie legions.

Original Text :

Andras magnus Marchio: visitur forma angelica, capite nycticoraci nigro simili, in lupo nigro and fortissimo equitans, bajulansque manu gladium acutissimum. Novit interficere dominum, servum and coadjutores: author est discordiarum. Dominatur legionibus triginta.

From Demonologia ( October 2003 )

The Goetia reports of the Demon Andras:

“He is a Great Marquis, appearing in the Form of an Angel with a Head like a Black Night Raven, riding upon a strong Black Wolf, and having a Sharp and Bright Sword flourished aloft in his hand. His Office isto sow Discords.

If the Exorcist have not a care, he will slay both him and his fellows. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits.”Some explanation may be useful in clarifying this description. By a night raven, anowl is intended. Black wolves were once fairly common in Europe. Both wolf and owl were considered to be animals of evil. The magician performing the evocation is called the “exorcist” in the English translation of the Goetia preserved in manuscript in the British Library (Sloane ms.2731). We would not apply the term exorcist to the magician today since the magicianis calling the spirit forth to visible appearance, rather than driving it away.

However, the term exorcist was once used more generally to describe someone who commanded spirits. Magicians traditionally had at least one assistant, usually more than one, to help them in their rituals. They stood inside a magic circle for protection — if the evoked Demon could tempt or deceive the magician or his assistants to step out from the circle, the Demon could then injure the careless human beings.
