Astib: The Night Duke of Barmiel
Astib is a demon named in the Ars Theurgia, a grimoire tradition concerned with spirits, directional rulers and the complex hierarchies of ceremonial magic. He holds the rank of duke under the infernal king Barmiel and is said to serve his master during the hours of the night.
Through his allegiance to Barmiel, Astib is connected with the southern direction. In magical systems such as the Ars Theurgia, direction is not merely geographical. It is part of a spiritual structure, where spirits are arranged according to rulership, movement, time and place. Astib therefore belongs to a specific current within the infernal order: a nocturnal servant of a southern king.
Although Astib holds the title of duke, he is unusual because he has no servants or ministering spirits of his own. This makes him different from many other spirits in the grimoires, who are often described as commanding legions, dukes, ministers or lesser spirits. Astib’s authority appears to be direct, but limited. He serves Barmiel without ruling a subordinate host beneath him.
This detail gives Astib a distinctive character. He is not a great infernal monarch surrounded by armies, nor a wandering spirit without rank. He stands between power and service: a duke without a court, a night servant attached to a greater ruler. His role suggests obedience, secrecy and specialised activity within the darker hours.
The fact that Astib serves at night is also significant. In occult tradition, night is the time of hidden operations, dreams, spirits, visions, fears and unseen movement. A demon who serves during the night belongs to the liminal realm between waking and sleep, visibility and concealment, knowledge and shadow. Astib’s power is therefore not loud or theatrical, but quiet, obscure and nocturnal.
As a spirit of the Ars Theurgia, Astib reminds us that demonology is not only made of famous names such as Lucifer, Asmodeus or Paimon. It is also filled with lesser-known spirits whose roles reveal the deeper architecture of the grimoires. Every rank, direction, hour and allegiance matters. Astib’s significance lies in his place within that hidden order.
