Ilarax: “The Cheerful One”

Ilarax is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears among the spirits serving the infernal ruler Magoth.

In S. L. MacGregor Mathers’ edition of the grimoire, Ilarax is placed under the joint authority of Magoth and Kore. This position situates him within the complex hierarchy of spirits that runs throughout the Abramelin tradition.

Mathers gives the meaning of the name as “The Cheerful One.” The title is unusual for a demonic spirit and creates an immediate contrast with the darker associations normally attached to infernal beings. The surviving text, however, does not provide enough detail to determine whether the title reflects Ilarax’s temperament, his manner of manifestation or a more symbolic quality attached to his name.

Another spelling of the name is Ilerak. Variations of this kind are common in old magical manuscripts, especially when names passed through different languages and later editorial traditions.

Very little else is recorded about Ilarax. He remains one of those obscure Abramelin spirits whose significance survives primarily through his name and his place within a wider system of infernal authority.

The Name Is Only the Beginning

Ilarax is easy to overlook because the surviving description is brief.

That does not make him unimportant.
