Mammon

Mammon is a powerful infernal figure associated above all with wealth, greed, material obsession and the corrupting hunger for possession. In later demonological tradition he is described as a Fallen Angel, an archdemon and a prince among the tempters of Hell, whose influence is strongest wherever the desire for riches begins to dominate the human will.

The name Mammon derives from an Aramaic term connected with wealth, property or worldly riches. Unlike many demons whose names originated as those of older gods or spirits, Mammon developed from the personification of material wealth itself. Over time, the word ceased to mean merely money and became something far darker: wealth transformed into an object of worship.

This idea appears powerfully in the Christian scriptures. In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ warns that a person cannot serve both God and Mammon. The passage helped transform Mammon from an abstract concept into an almost personal spiritual adversary, representing the moment when possession ceases to serve humanity and humanity begins to serve possession.

Medieval and early modern demonologists carried this transformation further. Mammon became associated with avarice, traditionally counted among the Seven Deadly Sins, and was imagined as the infernal intelligence behind insatiable greed. His temptation is not simply the desire to possess money. Mammon whispers that there is never enough. Wealth becomes security, security becomes power, power becomes identity, and eventually accumulation itself becomes the object of devotion.

In this sense Mammon is one of the most recognisable demons of the modern world. His kingdom does not require ruined temples, midnight invocations or visible apparitions. He manifests wherever human beings sacrifice loyalty, compassion, honour or even their own freedom for the promise of greater wealth. The miser guarding his treasure, the ruler selling justice, the merchant exploiting desperation and the magician who seeks occult knowledge solely for domination all belong symbolically within Mammon’s sphere.

Demonological traditions sometimes place Mammon among the greatest princes of Hell and occasionally draw parallels between him and figures such as Lucifer, Satan and Beelzebub. Such identifications vary considerably between texts, however, and Mammon is more commonly treated as a distinct infernal personality whose specialised domain is greed and material temptation.

Certain later classifications of the infernal hierarchy even assign Mammon a diplomatic function, describing him as an ambassador of Hell associated with England. Such elaborate infernal courts reflect the fascination of European demonologists with imagining Hell as a distorted mirror of earthly monarchy, complete with princes, ministers, dukes, ambassadors and officials.

Yet Mammon remains most powerful as an idea because his temptation rarely appears monstrous. He does not necessarily demand murder, sacrilege or open allegiance to Hell. He offers prosperity. He offers influence. He offers comfort. He promises that one more acquisition, one more triumph and one more possession will finally bring satisfaction.

It never does.

That endless hunger is Mammon.
