Nadriel

Nadriel is a demon named in the Henson translation of the Ars Theurgia. He serves in the court of Pamersiel, who is described as the first and chief spirit of the east.

Within this hierarchy, Nadriel holds the rank of duke. Like the other dukes who serve Pamersiel, he is portrayed as a difficult and dangerous spirit whose temperament makes dealing with him especially hazardous. His nature is described as arrogant and stubborn, while his loyalty to deception makes him fundamentally unreliable.

For this reason, Nadriel is not considered a spirit to whom confidential matters should be entrusted. Any magician attempting to work with him is warned that secrecy offers no protection when the spirit itself is inclined toward betrayal. His willingness to mislead makes caution essential whenever he is approached.

Yet the same aggressive quality that makes Nadriel dangerous can also make him useful within the logic of the Ars Theurgia. His forceful nature is said to be effective against other troublesome spirits, particularly those believed to infest or haunt houses. Rather than acting as a gentle protector, Nadriel confronts unwanted entities with the same hostility that defines his own character.

This gives him an unusual position within the grimoire. He is not trustworthy, yet his violent disposition can still be turned toward a specific purpose. The magician is therefore expected to understand the nature of the spirit well enough to recognise both the danger and the potential use of that danger.

The figure of Nadriel illustrates a recurring principle within ceremonial demonology. A spirit does not need to be benevolent in order to be useful. What matters is whether the practitioner understands the forces being approached and whether those forces can be directed without surrendering control to them.

Most people who encounter a name like Nadriel will never move beyond curiosity. They may read that he is dangerous, deceptive or useful against haunting spirits, but they will never understand the magical structure that gives those descriptions meaning.
