True Black Magic, also known as The Secrets of Secrets, is a mysterious black magic grimoire surrounded by claims of ancient origins, angelic translation, and Solomonic power. The work was supposedly written in the 1600s by a magician named Toscraec, who claimed that the text was based on a much older manuscript written in an unknown language.
According to the legend, Toscraec could only translate the manuscript with the help of an angel. This gives the grimoire an aura of divine secrecy, suggesting that its knowledge was not meant for ordinary hands. However, despite these dramatic claims, the text was probably written much later, most likely in the 18th century.
A Goetic Version of the Key of Solomon
True Black Magic is often described as a goetic adaptation of the Key of Solomon. It belongs to the wider Solomonic magical tradition, but places a stronger emphasis on talismans, magical characters, ritual operations, and the command of spiritual forces.
The book claims that the original manuscript was discovered in the tomb of Solomon and translated from Hebrew in 1750 by the magus Iroe-Grego. Whether this story is historical fact or occult legend, it connects the grimoire to one of the most powerful figures in ceremonial magic: King Solomon, the legendary master of spirits, seals, and hidden wisdom.
Talismans and Magical Characters
One of the most important features of True Black Magic is its collection of 45 talismans. Each talisman is given specific properties and uses, making the book a practical manual for magical work rather than merely a theoretical text.
The grimoire also claims to contain “all magical characters known unto this day.” In ceremonial magic, these characters are not just symbols. They are spiritual keys, used to focus the will, contact unseen forces, and direct magical power toward a specific purpose.
