Buer: The Demon of Healing, Philosophy and Herbal Wisdom
Buer is a Fallen Angel and the tenth of the seventy-two Spirits of Solomon. In the grimoire tradition, he holds the rank of President in Hell and is said to govern more than fifty legions of demons. He appears when the Sun is in Sagittarius, linking him symbolically with knowledge, teaching, expansion, philosophy and the search for higher truth.
Unlike many demons who are associated with force, destruction, temptation or domination, Buer is often presented as a spirit of learning and restoration. His power is connected with moral philosophy, natural philosophy, logic, healing, herbs and the secret virtues of plants. This makes him one of the more intellectually and medicinally significant spirits within the Solomonic tradition.
Buer in the Solomonic Tradition
In the old grimoires, Buer is not merely described as a demon of command, but as a teacher. He instructs the magician in the logical arts and in the deeper workings of nature. His knowledge belongs to a time when philosophy, medicine, astrology, herbalism and magic were not seen as separate fields, but as parts of one great hidden science.
To study Buer is to enter a worldview in which illness, remedy, thought, morality and spiritual influence are all connected. The magician did not look at the natural world as lifeless matter, but as a living system filled with virtues, signatures, correspondences and hidden powers.
Buer’s connection with herbs and plants is especially important. He is said to teach the virtues of all herbs and plants, revealing their healing qualities and occult properties. This places him close to the magical traditions of herbal medicine, plant spirit work and natural magic.
Buer as a Spirit of Healing
Buer is traditionally said to heal all distempers. The word “distemper” can refer to illness, imbalance, disorder or disturbance. In this sense, Buer may be understood as a spirit connected not only with physical healing, but also with the restoration of balance.
His healing is not separated from wisdom. Buer teaches the hidden laws behind nature, the logic of causes and effects, and the virtues of remedies. He represents the old occult belief that true healing requires understanding: understanding the body, the mind, the soul, the plant world and the invisible forces that move through creation.
This makes Buer a fascinating figure for students of demonology. He is not simply a dark or frightening presence. He is a spirit of knowledge, medicine and disciplined thought. His power is found in learning, discernment and the ability to recognise the hidden order within the natural world.
Buer and the Gift of Familiars
Buer is also said to give good familiars. In magical tradition, a familiar is a spirit helper or attendant that assists the practitioner in spiritual work, knowledge, protection or magical operations. This further reinforces Buer’s role as a guide and teacher.
The familiars associated with Buer are not presented as chaotic forces, but as helpful spirits given to assist the magician. Through this, Buer becomes a mediator between the practitioner and the wider world of spiritual knowledge.
The Symbolism of Sagittarius
Buer’s appearance when the Sun is in Sagittarius adds another layer of meaning. Sagittarius is associated with the search for truth, philosophy, learning, travel, expansion and the higher mind. This symbolism fits Buer perfectly.
He is a demon of knowledge that reaches beyond the ordinary. He teaches the wisdom of nature, the structure of thought, and the healing virtues hidden in the green world. His Sagittarian connection suggests a spirit who pushes the seeker toward broader understanding and deeper study.
The Significance of Buer
Buer is one of the most intriguing demons of the Goetia because he challenges simple ideas about what demons are. He is not merely a figure of fear or corruption. He is a teacher of philosophy, a revealer of natural secrets, a healer of disorders and a giver of useful familiars.
For those studying demonology, Buer shows that the grimoires contain far more than dramatic images of infernal power. They preserve a complex magical worldview where demons may teach medicine, philosophy, logic, astrology, herbalism and the hidden virtues of creation.
To study Buer is to study the meeting point between demonology and natural magic. He stands where the infernal, the intellectual and the medicinal come together.
