Amasiel

Amasiel is a demon named in the Ars Theurgia, where he appears within the court of the wandering prince Menadiel. His position is unusual because his activity is closely bound to that of another spirit, the infernal duke Drasiel.

According to the text, Amasiel follows Drasiel in all things. This relationship is so precise that even the period of his manifestation depends upon the duke he accompanies. Drasiel may appear during the third hour of the day, while Amasiel follows immediately afterwards and may manifest during the fourth hour.

The arrangement reveals something important about the spirit hierarchy described in the Ars Theurgia. Amasiel is not presented as an independent demon who can simply be approached whenever the magician wishes. His position is defined through obedience to another spirit. His movement follows Drasiel’s movement, and his allotted period follows the hour assigned to his companion.

This makes Amasiel an intriguing example of infernal dependency. Much of ceremonial demonology portrays the spirit world as governed by strict relationships of authority. A demon’s freedom may be limited by the ruler he serves, while another spirit may determine the moment in which he becomes accessible.

Menadiel’s status as a wandering prince adds another dimension to this structure. Unlike infernal rulers associated with a permanent directional quarter, wandering princes move through the compass and carry their courts with them. Amasiel therefore belongs to a hierarchy that is itself mobile, yet his relationship with Drasiel remains fixed.

Where Drasiel goes, Amasiel follows.

When Drasiel’s appointed period ends, Amasiel’s begins.

The surviving description tells us little about Amasiel’s appearance or individual powers, but that absence is itself characteristic of many spirits preserved within the Ars Theurgia. Their significance does not always depend upon dramatic mythology. Sometimes their identity exists almost entirely through the structure in which the grimoire places them.

Amasiel is therefore a demon of succession and obedience, a spirit whose very position demonstrates that infernal hierarchy operates according to rules that the magician is expected to understand before attempting to engage with it.
