Jakobsen, Merete Demant

Merete Demant Jakobsen- Jakobsen’s volume Shamanism: Traditional and Contemporary Approaches to the Mastery of Spirits and Healing (1999) reviews previous work on the Greenlandic angakkoq and contrasts this with neo-shamanic practices. While noting the positive benefits of neo-shamanisms for its practitioners, she points out that these practices are far removed from the challenging and potentially dangerous role of the angakkoq, who walk between the worlds of human and other-than-human persons and mediate engagements between them.
