Omages: The Mage-Spirit of the Abramelin Tradition

Omages is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears among the spirits serving the arch-demons Astaroth and Asmodeus. In the Abramelin system, Omages is connected with the great magical operation centred on the Holy Guardian Angel, a rite that stands at the heart of the entire work.

According to the occultist Samuel L. MacGregor Mathers, the name Omages is derived from the Greek term magos, meaning “mage,” “wise man,” or “magician.” This connection is especially significant because it gives Omages a distinctly magical identity. His name suggests a spirit bound to the idea of the magician itself: knowledge, ritual power, occult skill, hidden wisdom and the ability to work through unseen forces.

In different manuscript versions of the Abramelin material, the name appears as Omagos, which supports the proposed Greek origin. This variant spelling shows how spirit names could shift between manuscripts while still preserving an older linguistic root. In grimoire studies, such variations are important. They reveal the living, unstable nature of magical texts as they passed through scribes, translators and occult schools.

Omages serves beneath Astaroth and Asmodeus, two major infernal powers with very different but intense symbolic currents. Astaroth is often associated with hidden knowledge, memory, secrets and corrupted wisdom, while Asmodeus is linked with desire, passion, disruption and dangerous force. Omages stands beneath both, suggesting a spirit whose magical nature may involve knowledge and power, but also temptation, distortion and the risk of misusing occult ability.

His connection with the Holy Guardian Angel working is also important. The Abramelin operation is not a casual magical practice. It requires discipline, purification and spiritual alignment before the magician commands the lower spirits. Omages therefore appears within a system where the true magician must first be brought under higher divine guidance before engaging with demonic forces.

Symbolically, Omages may be understood as a demon of magical identity itself. His name evokes the magos, the one who knows, commands and works with hidden forces. Yet because he is demonic, he also reflects the shadow of the magician: pride in occult power, the temptation to command without wisdom, and the danger of seeking knowledge without spiritual balance.

This makes Omages a fascinating figure in the Abramelin hierarchy. He is not famous like Asmodeus, Astaroth or Paimon, but his name touches one of the central themes of ceremonial magic: what it means to become a magician. Is the magician a seeker of wisdom, a commander of spirits, a servant of divine order, or someone tempted by power? Omages stands at that threshold.

To study Omages is to enter the deeper world of the Abramelin tradition, where every name matters and every spirit belongs to a larger magical structure. His name reminds us that the path of the mage is never neutral. It can lead toward illumination, or toward the shadow of power.
