Apilki is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears in the service of Amaimon, one of the great infernal rulers associated with the four cardinal directions. His identity is therefore defined primarily through his allegiance to a higher-ranking spirit, placing him within the carefully ordered hierarchy that governs the demonic world of the Abramelin tradition.
In the 1898 translation prepared by S. L. MacGregor Mathers, the name Apilki is interpreted as meaning “the misleader.” Mathers connects this meaning with a Greek linguistic root, although such etymologies remain uncertain because the names preserved in the Abramelin manuscripts often passed through several stages of copying and translation before reaching their modern forms.
The demon’s name also appears as Apelki, a variation that illustrates the instability of spirit names within old magical manuscripts. Differences of only a few letters can emerge through scribal error, phonetic interpretation, or the attempt of later translators to reconstruct names whose original form had already become obscure.
Apilki’s importance therefore lies less in an elaborate description of his appearance or individual powers than in the position he occupies beneath Amaimon. Within the Abramelin system, such spirits belong to a much larger structure of command in which the great infernal rulers preside over numerous subordinate entities. The meaning attributed to Apilki’s name adds a suggestive dimension to that role, since “the misleader” evokes the idea of a spirit associated with confusion, deception, or the deliberate drawing of someone away from the correct path.
Whether this interpretation reflects the original meaning of the name cannot be established with certainty, but it fits naturally within the demonological imagination surrounding temptation and spiritual error. Apilki thus remains an obscure but intriguing figure whose significance emerges most clearly when he is understood as part of Amaimon’s wider infernal court rather than as an isolated demon.
