Ariton

Ariton—also known as Egin or Egyn—is a demon whose name is commonly traced to the Greek word arrhēton, meaning “secret” or “mysterious,” a derivation noted by S. L. MacGregor Mathers. Within the tradition of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, Ariton is listed as one of eight sub-princes serving within an extended infernal hierarchy that includes major demonic figures such as Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Astaroth.
Ariton also holds cosmological significance, as he is named among the four demons presiding over the cardinal directions. Under his alternate name Egyn, he is specifically associated with the North, governing that quarter and its corresponding spiritual influences.
According to both Mathers and Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, Ariton’s equivalent in Jewish demonological lore is Azael. In the Abramelin tradition, Ariton is attributed with a wide range of formidable powers. He is said to possess knowledge of the past, present, and future, and can induce visions in those he influences. He is able to cause spirits to appear, assume any form, and grant familiars to practitioners.
Among his more remarkable abilities, Ariton is reputed to discover hidden treasures, reveal the identities of thieves, and even revive the dead. He is also credited with granting the power of flight, as well as manifesting warriors or protective forces to defend those under his charge. These attributes position him as a figure of revelation, protection, and secret knowledge, rather than one limited to deception alone.
It is notable that a demon named Aratron appears in several esoteric works as the spirit of Saturn, leading some scholars to speculate on symbolic or functional overlap between the two figures, though they remain distinct entities within their respective traditions.
Within occult interpretation, Ariton is often viewed as a guardian of hidden realms—of buried knowledge, unseen forces, and liminal powers—embodying the principle that what is concealed may yet be revealed to those who know how to ask.
